Roundstone Streams

These are the brooks and streams of the Roundstone Clan lands:

Anvil Brook

Anvill Brook flows from the Stormwalk Mountains and joins the Stream near Caroman. It is the main river of the Sambari but is lost in the Stream with hardly a trace. It seems to share some of the eerie nature of the Stream. No one sacrifices to it and the Sambari cannot communicate with any entity in it. The people who live near its banks say that no one should take a boat on it alone or sit alone beside it. There are stories that people have disappeared who have done so. No one swims in the brook if they can avoid it.

Don’t Drink

This upper part of this stream is of swift flowing dark water and comes from a passage beneath Bright Eye. It joins the Anvil Brook in Machun’s Marsh. In the marsh the stream is infected by the disease spirit Machun. The daemon of the stream called Irsis is bound into into the service of Machun. Perhaps if the daemon was freed it would run pure again. Its poisonous waters have no effect on the eerie Anvil Brook. In theory the upper part of the stream above the marsh may be drinkable but because of its origin no one cares to find out. No one sacrifices to Irsis under normal circumstances but is not unknown for people to try to gain its powers:

Neverlass

Neverless is the daemon of Neverless which is the stream which flows through Noble and Lade. Orvaldunus the Noble sacrificed to her and asked her blessing when he founded the village. In Sea Season, Fertility Week, Waterday it is her festival. There is a procession for girls and women from her spring on Bear Hill to her end at Anvil Brook in Lade.  On the way small sacrificial bronze objects (a fish, a basket and a hook) are thrown into the deep pool Neverlass makes where she comes down in a waterfall from the hill. They also decorate the small plank bridges over the stream with flowers. On this day too all the bridges are repaired if necessary and any blockages that have fallen into the stream such as trees or big stones washed down from the hill are cleared by the men. The last part of the festival is a ceremony with dancing, singing and sacrificed animals in Lade. If Neverlass is seen she is a girl with greenish skin and hair who sits on the bank of the stream and cries with her tears falling into the water. No one knows why she cries but there is a story that if anyone could find out they could bring a great blessing on the villages.

Witness

Witness is a stream which runs from an icy corrie on Four Horn Hill to join the Anvil Brook near the village of Old Spear. It is a swift, icy-cold, rocky stream with many small waterfalls and runs through a narrow wooded valley. Witness was once a servant of Heler. When Ui fought Heler for the final time she witnessed the icy touch which left Heler frozen in the sky and fled away up the hill but she too was caught and frozen into a lake of ice. She did not melt and begin to move again until Heler freed her at the Dawn. Even so the water of the stream is still always colder than any other stream in the area and the lake and the stream still freezes solid in Dark Season. People, especially worshippers of Heler sacrifice to her on Waterday, Movement Week, Dark Season when they hope that the hot blood of a sheep will help her to move again. If she is seen she is a young woman with blue -white skin and hair who walks along the stream. In Dark Season she can be seen frozen under the ice in the lake.

Gallop

Gallop is the swift flowing stream which springs from Red Horse Ridge and flows into the Anvil Brook between Roundstone Stead and Lade. The daemon of the stream is called Nagis and he is sacrificed to by the people of Red Horse who breed the best horses of the Samabri and by the people of Jerith Stead who are known for their swift running messengers. To retain the blessings of the stream it is necessary to drink some of its water each day. Nargis appears as a white horse galloping along the stream. In Sea Season, Movement Week, Waterday there is a horse race and a foot race in honour of the stream from Red Horse Ridge to Jerith’s Stead. Each horse wears a collar of plaited red leather. A bay horse is sacrificed to Nargis at Red Horse in exchange for his blessing.

Singing Stream

Singing is the name of the stream which has its source on Aelith Ridge and flows down into the Anvil Brook near Lade. The stream passes over a series of little water falls near Chom Stead each of which makes a different musical note which varies according to the time of year and rainfall. Visiting the falls is popular with musicians who sacrifice to it by playing or singing music to accompany the sound of the falls.
